About VIMS :
Vijayanagara Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) is a tertiary care hospital located in Bellary. It has a combined bed strength of over 1500, spread over three large campuses: the main campus consisting of the
Medical College and the Medical College Hospital, the District Hospital and the Govt. Wellesley Hospital. The Government Dental College and Research Institute (GMCRI), the Nursing College and ANM Training
Centre are also part of VIMS. The Old Students Association Guest House (VIKRAMA) is located under lush green surroundings within the campus.
VIMS is an autonomous institute administered by the Governing Council, appointed by the Karnataka Government. VIMS is administered by the Director who is overall incharge of administration and financial matters
pertaining to the institute. The Principal is the head of academics. The GMCRI and Nursing College are administered by the respective Principals. The three major hospitals are administered by Superintendent and
District Surgeon / R M O along with Nursing Superintendents.
VIMS caters to the patients, especially of poorer socio economic groups from Bellary, Chitradurga, Koppal, Raichur as well as Anantapur and Kurnool districts of Andhra Pradesh.Services in the broad specialities of
medicine as well as super specialities such as Urology, Nephrology, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Pediatric surgery are provided in the institution. Well equipped ICU and RICU, Dialysis Unit, CT Scan facilities,
Brachytherapy and Cobalt Therapy are among the facilities available.
The VIMS, under Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bangalore offers undergraduate courses in medicine (MBBS), Dentistry and post graduation in the broad specialities and superspecialities,
selected through a Common Entrance Test conducted by the Karnataka government.

there to assist the doctors for emergency service of patients

Govt.Wellesley Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases :
This Hospital was started as Wellesley Sanatorium Jail Hospital on 23-11-1929. For treating patients with Tuberculosis, from among convicts and political prisoners in it had only 4 wards with 100 beds.Since it was a
jail hospital, it was built with security in mind. Even now the double row barbed wire fence around the hospital complex, police guard room at the entry of the hospital, massive steel doors with heavy looking system
and strong windows of older wards remind one of its ancestry. More or less at the same time quarters for the nursing staff and then the police staff were instructed without any facilities inside of them.
After independence it was converted to TB Sanatorium for the use of civilians and was re-named as Govt.Wellesley TB Sanatorium.This hospital is serving mainly as referral hospital. This is the biggest hospital in
this part of the state. The teaching programme is undertaken here.

Dental College :
Government of Karnataka proposed to establish a new Government Dental college as this district was the only one to be deprived of oral healthcare needs. The initiation for this project was undertaken in the year
2004 vide government order and the approval of Dental council of India was sought. After successful inspections from Dental council of India, Ministry of health, Govt of India gave a green signal for the admission of
first batch of 50 undergraduate students for the academic year 2008-09.Since inception along with teaching activities, The hospital section is also involved in serving the oral healthcare needs of poor and needy
patients not only from the district of Bellary, but also to cater for patients from the satellite townships of neighbouring districts and the state of Andhra Pradesh. This Research institute was conceived as a premier
referral centre in dentistry for satellite townships and associated rural population.
Nursing College :
General Nurse Midwife Course:
School of nursing started in the year 1963 with intake of 12 students Upto 1995, it is a 3yrs 9 month midwifery course later it changed course as a 3yrs in the year of 1996-2004.In 2005 curriculum has changed and the duration of course 3 years and internship 6 months under the guidance of Indian Nursing Council and Karnataka State Nursing Council.
Basic B.Sc Nursing Course :
It is started in the year of 2008 with a intake of 20 students and in the next academic year 2009-10 the intake of student is 25.It is running successfully and first batch students has got 100% results out of which one distinction ,16 first class and 3 second class.
